If you're a collector, think about getting a glass-topped display table. The drawer opens below it so you can add your collection of artifacts from your travels or seashells from your trip to the beach. You can even make little memory boxes of your favorite things from your children.
Well, if just could be small accent tables. Smaller than an end table, sofa table or console, these tables are one of the most important pieces of furniture you can have. Ask any designer and they will tell you that they are not only functional and practical, but versatile as well.
The first thing you'll need to do is assess the bare area of the room and decide how you would like your accent table to function. In addition to the finishing touch it will add to the room, does it also need to be functional? An example of this would be an entry table used in a foyer, to accommodate a phone. It would be a great idea to also have a drawer to accommodate a phone book.
Tables also come in a variety of shapes, including the preferred triangular accent tables for any empty corners; square stand alone accent tables with storage spaces underneath, mainly used for decorative purposes; rectangular accent tables which can also be designed to hold reading material; or the ubiquitous round which is usually placed next to chairs or sofa ends and can be ornately designed.
Style Tips. The real trick to choosing a table that stands out and compliments your other furniture is to find one that matches while still offering a unique perspective on the room. Avoid mixing styles of furniture, but find other things to mix up, like colors of wood. In some cases, you may have the most amazing piece of art that needs a simple table to show it off. In this case, a plain table that blends into the furniture may be the only exception to the rule. This will allow the artwork to shine.
For instance, accent tables make a great substitute for a nightstand in a bedroom. Or you can add one to a corner of the room that needs a small lamp, such as right next to a chair where you like to read or watch TV. You can also add a small table to your bathroom, placing guest towels on it instead of a towel rack. Add an antique washbasin and a pitcher filled with fresh flowers or potpourri to give the bathroom a fresh and fragrant look.
Even what may look like worn out accent tables may not be done, quite yet. Just because an accent table becomes old or unwanted that doesn't mean that it is ready for the trash. A bit of sanding and a fresh coat of paint and that old accent table will become brand new and you will find new uses for the same old table.
