Sad, since these tables can really complete the look of the room and not only give you some much needed storage and stacking areas, but also add character. That's because they come in so many varieties, styles and sizes.
What is your decorating style? Look around at your existing furniture. Is wood the main material, or do you favor glass and chrome? Maybe wrought iron is more your style. If wood dominates the room, your choice for end tables can be stained pine, oak or cherry, to name just a few. The color you choose should coordinate with the wood color of the current furnishings in your room, and be compatible with the pattern on your upholstered pieces and window treatments. If your decorating style tends to be eclectic, then a mixture of materials and looks might have great appeal to you. Glass tables not only look modern and chic, but also add depth to a room that is small in size.
Some prefer to have a table that has several drawers for storage; others prefer a single drawer with perhaps a small shelf along the bottom. It largely depends on the needs of your home. A single drawer table with long legs is visually lighter than an end table with drawers or a drawer and a lower shelf. The "visual weight" of a piece is important in keeping a room from looking too crowded.
The same is certainly true of end tables. While wood tables have been traditional favorites in American homes for centuries, metal end tables will give your home an entirely different look. Where wood tables add warmth, metal tables can either lend an air of sophistication or even a bit of energy to the room, depending on the type of metal you select and the design of the table itself.
Nesting end tables can also come in handy during those big screen sports events your family loves to host. If you don't have a coffee table or it it's too small to handle the munchies and drinks of a big game, you can pull out the nesting tables and put them into immediate service.
Purchasing Sets. First try to purchase these tables in a set. Often sets come with two end tables and a coffee table, so make sure that you need a coffee table before following this route. Remember you will only save money if you actually need the other items in the set.
The end table runners that were helping to avoid scratches are a good start. You should also have coasters very noticeable on both end tables so no one can claim they didn't see them.
